Default blowing engine from running too rich??

i was told you can blow your engine by running to rich at work today? is that true. they have been telling me im gonna blow mine since its running real rich. i thought all that can really do is foul plugs and 02 sensors, etc... it doesnt run so rich that it wont run... you can just smell it through the exhuast some, yet my exhuast has no cats.

if you lean it out badly you can blow it...running rich..you can foul out plugs/plug cats/clog up o2's and have some carbon build up...but i really dont think rich will blow you up.. lean will tho i mean the more lean u go the more power but thats why u get tuned right so u lean out to the safest spot you can

Thats pretty funny. I don't think i have ever heard that. No you can not blow from running rich. No you will not ruin your 02 sensors. Yes you will burn up your cats (but you dont have any). The rich run limit is 9.5:1, black smoke will start at 10:1, you can foul plugs at 10.5:1 Which it will idle rough. You dont really have anything to worry about.

ok. thats good to know. thanks guys... another mechanic told me that that is pretty knowledgable so i wanted to double check him before listening. he said something about wetting the cylinder walls or something and gas getting in the oil and such... but i thought that would only happen with bad piston rings. it does idle rough but that is from the cams.

He could've meant that you could wash out the rings and get fuel in the oil, possibly. Ask him to be more specific than "blow" the motor. Sucking a small animal into your serpentine pulley system could "blow" the motor too.

you shouldn have a problem running rich, mine runs rich but it runs great, if your running rich the extra gas is helping to cool down the cylinder walls and piston, when you run lean there is nothing there to really help cool it down a little bit, and it gets hot and then it goes boom lol

Well, when running F/I your optimum A/F ratio is going to be between 11.0-12.0:1 unless you're running some of the good stuff.... By that I mean C15 or better.
