RE: best speed for mpg
~60mph in 5th is about the best mileage I have experienced. Shifting early and barely hitting the gas when accelerating is really the best way since most gas mileage drop happend during stop and go.
Chriswells, in what world will a car spinning the same rpm but in different gears give the same MPG. Even if the were in a vaccum and had the same load in each gear, the car in the higher gear would travel farther theoretically using the same amount of gas.
1500rpm in 3rd @35mph, and 1500 in 5th @55mph (for the sake of argument). Lets break this down, the first car would have traveled 35 miles spinning 1500rpm for an hour and the other car would have traveled 55 miles for about the same amount of gas used.

RE: best speed for mpg
MPG is not directly related to RPM. It is directly related to engine load.
For example, you'll get better MPG at 3000 RPM on a flat road and light throttle than at 2000 RPM going uphill at 50% throttle etc
In this picture the high MPGs were at 80mph in 5th on the highway. All other readings areat typically less than 2000 RPM driving around town.
If any one wants a copy of that Excel spreadsheetemail me and I'll send it to you. It automatically calculates your mpg when you enter the mileage info.

RE: best speed for mpg
I KNOW THE BET WAY TO GET THE BEST GAS MILEAGE!!
The best gear to be in is.....................PARK!
Put on your running shoes, a bottle of water, and your MP3 player or I-pod, whatever has less wind resistance, and GO!
