Will 275/40/17 tires fit onto a 17 x 8 wheel?
I have a 97 Cobra with 245/45/17 555r's. I have had these tires for five months and they worked well when i got them but ive used all the tread life out of them. I have heard very good things from the mt drag radials, and i would like to get them. But the only problem is the only tire size they make for my wheel is a 275/40/17. do u think this will fit on my stock rim or no?

Recommended rim width for that size tire is 17X9, however I've seen 285/40R17's mounted on 17X8's with no problem at all. Just make sure you run them at around 30 p.s.i (no more than 32psi)

275/40/17's will fit on a 17x8 wheel no problem. bunch of my buddy's have it on there GT's and they have the stock 17x8 bullit wheels that come stock on the 04 GT's. before i got the Chrome Cobra R's in 17x9 i had a 275 on an 8" wide rim.

For the 185,345th time.... a 275 is a poor fit for an 8" wheel!
I really wish people would STOP saying this is "OK" because "My buddy did it" or "I had no problems" or "It is done all the time".
If you want to run a 275, do it the correct way and install AT LEAST a 9" wheel.

I agree.
Here is a simple explanation-
a 275 is 10.83 inches wide. You have an 8 inch wide rim. That is just under an 1 1/2 inches overhang on either side of the rim...this is ok if you have a 7-8 inch side wall lol, but you dont drive a pick up truck...Now, you will have a 4.3 inch side wall in that aspect ratio, so honestly its not NEARLY as bad as it could be, but I still wouldn't recommend it, it puts undue stress on the sidewalls.
JMO though...

They fit and run fine, at least they on the OEM 8" wheels on my '03, however to be honest I find they are "8 inch" in name only,
I measured a spare wheel and found the actual width between the inside of the bead seating surfaces is 8.4". Falken recommends a 8.5" to 10" wheel for the 275/40-17 so it's 0.1" under.
Here is a shot of a 275/40-17 Falken Azenis on my stock wheels:
There side wall overhangs the wheel rim by 3/8":
In short they fit fine and are 100% safe...

Wow...a 275 tire that is only 9.15" wide?.....Thats like a 235....
OK, so I retract my statement. Take everything i posted before and put the word "measured" before each number and then it will work. I can understand the factory rim being .4 inches different, but a 275 tire being over an inch narrower than spec'd? WTF is up with that? Are all tires like this?

That said, you would be surprised at the wide (no pun intended) variation in actual tire widths vs. the DOT rated size. I have seen them be +/- 3/8" as compared to the "nominal" width...
