Default timing advance.

well i just did a pi intake swap,pp tb/plenum,and bassani catted x and 180 t stat not to long ago.

would advancing my timing make the car run better? more hp? i dont mind using a higher grade gas i use 89 now.

if so how do i advance my timing and what should i advance it to?

thanks.

edit: also should i do underdrive pulleys and an aftermarket maf?
or should i just save my money for better mods.

put 93 in it, If you have a handheld tuner with a tune thats unlocked advance it 1-2 and make a wot run and see if it pops or detonates if not, advance it a little more til it does then back it down a bit and leave it there it should be close then, It's nice to have an air/fuel ratio gauge too when doing this.

if you dont have a tuner you need a timing aduster right? getting a tuner and gears in the future but want something to give the car an extra umph and run better untill then.

i read an article on bolt ons on a new edge and they advanced the timing with a steeda timing adjuster and it seemed to make a good difference in power and torque.

6hp and 15ftlbs of torque

Without a tuner, and using the Steeda adjuster, all you can change is the base timing--this is the mechanical equivalent of changing the Global Spark Adder and "sort of" the Spark Borderline Table in the tune.

The SBT defines the maximum allowed advance at combinations of load and rpm. The PCM calculates an timing value (based on a whole bunch of things, including load and rpm) and then compares that value to the value in the SBT--it selects whichever is less, and then adds the Global Spark Adder value to get the final timing.

I say "sort of" regarding the SBT because the Steeda adjuster mechanically adds advance of which the PCM is unaware, making the limits defined in the SBT that much higher as well.

Without properly changing the Spark Borderline Table you will not have optimised timing at the various load/rpm points, and run the risk of the timing added by the mechanical adjuster (which the PCM doesn't know about) pushing the advance too high at certain load/rpm combinations.

^In other words buy a handheld tuner if you want to mess with your timing.

UDP's suck. Take out the 180*, there's no point in it, it wont help anything. Save up for a PI engine swap and some gears. (Or you could always buy Stage2 ported PI heads and Forged PI internals and not waist your time with stock PI)
