You would have been 100% positive doing how it was told above you by spinning the drive shaft and you/he wouldn't have wasted time or $$$ by pulling the cover.

chalk it up as a lesson learned. next time dont leave your car there, stay with it intill its done and ask to see any parts before they are installed on your car.

I'm having a trusted mechanic pull the axle cover off and check what the ratio is stamped on the ring gear is. So I'll know for sure what I have Monday afternoon.

That's only 14 mpg. Is most of your driving in the city. I drive 7-10 mph over the speed limit. That 75-80 on the interstate, 60-65 on the highways, and 60-?? on the county roads. I get an average of 20 mpg.

Lesson here is that you needed to get a replacement set from AM first, then have him install new set instead of whatever he had laying around.

You got screwed man. Personally I think you can tell just from driving the car - seems like a big difference to me....

But regardless after all this time - the gears cost what less then $200.00 I'm sure - if he's not willing to fix it - your best bet is to post his name on here and that way everyone will know - lawyers and legal stuff cost way to much for the bother and small claims court is a joke anyway ....

(or you could burn his shop to the ground ..... - just kidding)

( but seriously.....)

Originally (last year) when the gears were initially installed, they produced a ton of gear whine. The guy who did the install swore he got it right and claimed that the noise had to be coming from the transmission (which had never previously made any noise). I didn't believe him, so I took the car to two other mechanics to listen to and they both said that the noise was definitely coming from the rear end and it was likely that guy didn't get the install right or maybe the gears were defective. So I go back to the transmission shop, and tell him that I didn't think that the noise was coming from the transmission and neither did anyone else I talked to. He said that he wanted to take another crack at setting up the rear end, and he'd do it for free. I agreed to let him try again. The next day he said that he put in another set of gears that he happened to have on hand and that now it's quiet as stock. Which it is. He charged me for the gears he installed and said to return the gears I bought from American Muscle because they were defective. I did and American Muscle verified the gears were indeed defective and issues a refund for them.

However with the issue with the speedometer/odometer accuracy, I'm now thinking that the gears he happened to have laying around weren't 4.10s.
You left your mustang over night with some mechanic that was most likely pissed off at you ? Did your tires look worn down at all when you got it back ?
