4.6 oil consumption

4.6 oil consumption
My car is going through oil between changes like crazy. I talked to a Ford tech and he said that it was normal for the 4.6 and 5.4 to go through 2-3 quarts between oil changes. Does this sound right? Is it burning or where else would it be going?

It depends on your driving habits. The 4.6 Will consume considerable amounts of oil if driven hard before the fliuds reach operating temperature. In addition or in lieu of that, there is the distinct possibility that the oil is leaking or being consumed somewhere else internally. Valve guides? Are you getting any symptoms? Drips in the driveway? Smoke? Anything to help.
It should consume a small amount of oil as the ford tech stated between changes, but not THAT much.

2-3 quartz is not normal. That tech doesn't know what he is talking about to say that is normal. I have 104k on my motor and the oil level doesn't budge.
Can you see any leaks under the hood? Are you blowing smoke out the tail pipes when you fire the car up?

To put your mind at ease, the 2003 GT I had for a brief period consumed oil like a wild banshee. Like the Ford tech you spoke to, I too thought it was normal. I guess it depends on how the car rolled off the line. The one I had made some very noticeable metallic sounds from the engine bay at idle. It wasn't from abuse, just a lemon I'm guessing...

I HAVE INSTALLED A LOT OF VALVE STEM SEALS FOR OIL CONSUMPTION.I HAVE ALSO SEEN GUIDE WEAR CAUSE OIL CONSUMPTION.IF THE ENGINE HAS BEEN NEGLECTED THE RINGS COULD BE STICKING,NOT VERY COMMON THOUGH.I AGREE WITH EVERYONE ELSE.2-3 QUARTS ISNT RIGHT.
