It's actually a generator, and ours have eight diodes:
In the early days when the diodes were externally mounted the driven device was an alternator as it produced alternating current electricity, when the diodes got moved into the device and it's output became direct current it technically became a generator--but the name had already stuck...
Ford has been referring to it properly since at least 2000:
Now consider this--those motorised things we use in RVs, at construction sites, and in the wake of hurricanes here in Florida--you know, those things that make 120/240 VAC?
They are really alternators, but we call them generators...

And Cliff takes me to school yet again....I realized they were referred to as generators, since the diodes moved inside, however, i did not take the time to think about the circuit long enough to remember the other two diodes..
