Default Fuel Smell

Hello im new to this forum; i have a 2000 mustang GT with a 4.6 engine, and has a 161,000 miles on it.
When fueling, gas splashes back out of the tank. Im not sure what the problem is but it smells like gas everytime i pull it in the garage. There is no signs of fuel leaking from the car. PLEASE help.

It is a fuel smell when the engine is off and in the garage, also gas splashes back at me when I try to fill up with gas.

Check to condition of the fuel tank filler tube--see this thread...

Assuming they you don't have a leak at the gas tank filler hose like cliffy said, or a external leak anywhere on the tank itself I would check the EVAP system. The purpose of the EVAP system is to take gas fumes that build up while the care is inoperative and store them in the charcoal canister. When starting the car the EVAP system is activated and the fumes are moved from the canister and are pushed into the intake manifold or plenum. I would check all the rubber hoses between the gas tank to the charcoal canister (located behind the passenger side fender) and the hose from the canister to the solenoid and the solenoid to the plenum. The hose that attaches to the plenum and the solenoid is known to dry rot and crumble apart, the hose is black with a red stripe.

I looked at my filler neck under the car and it did have a plastic cover around the filler tube, I cut it off and there was rust all over the tube. So I went to a near by junk yard and found a filler tube out of a 1999 mustang that looked brand new and did not have the plastic cover around the tube, I installed it and so far everything looks good. Thanks everybody.

I had a pretty strong fuel smell last year and turns out the line running to my fuel rails next to cylinder 8 was leaking a bit of fuel. Car is garaged and the smell was really strong til i discovered it. Was a very slow leak and if i watched it you can see it slowly drip.
