HID question? 55w or 35w?
Hey guys, I was thinking about doing a set of hids in my stang to help me out when it gets foggy down here. I was wondering 55 or 35 watt for the headlights? I know 55 would be brighter but would I get pulled for it all the time? Please help me out! I was thinking I would do 35 dual beams up top and then 55 down at the fogs so I could turn them off when near a cop. What do you think, what are your experiences?

the wattage isnt whats going to get you noticed. its the color of the bulb (3.5k, 5k, 6k, 8k, 10k, 12k, 30k, etc....). those are the "temperatures" of the bulb that make it white, yellow, purple, blue, whatever. also i think 55w is too much for fogs, you may melt the housing. 55w for the headlamps, 35w for fogs.
i havent gotten pulled over once for HIDS but i also dont live in nazifornia and dont know anything about HIDS in cali. i know cars do come factory with HIDS but i dont know if its "legal" to add them, or what temperature is acceptable. USUALLY if you stick with about 4.5-6k you are fine (4.5k is "standard color", 5k is "pure white", and 6k just has a very slight blue tint to it). its when you go into the VERY blue (12k), purple(30k?), yellow(3k), etc... bulbs that get you flagged down.
i would just stop by or call a local PD and ask them what the policy is on HID's. that will tell you the for sure answer.

I have 55w 8k HID's on my 97 mustang w/ smoked headlights and its still WAY brighter than my cousin's 35W 6k HID's w/ stock lights on his 08 focus.
55W is not recommended for Fogs as they are encased in a small housing which would cause malfunctions. I live in california and never been pulled over for them.

I was pulled over with my 55w 6k hid's. They were really bright. The cops said that my headlight was out but it was pretty blinding when I turned so I figure it was the brightness that grabbed his attention.
I changed to a 35w and they seem to be bright but not as blinding to others on the road.
I would do 35w all around personally. Though 55w looked awesome because it lights up the entire road when its pitch black.

Specifically for fog, 3000K (yellow) shows the greatest amount of contrast in driving in adverse driving conditions. I installed these in the fog lights of my wifes TSX. Many lexus' come factory with yellow HID fog lights. One being the 01-05 Lexus IS300.
