Default When replacing cams...how do you retime the engine?

Seems like people are afraid of the timing setup on these modular engines, my only real concern is how to get it all back in time.

My guess would be that there is a mark on the crank gear that would point down @ TDC on #1 at compression stroke. Then the chains would have a marked link that would correspond to mark on each cam gear when oriented towards a certain mark on the head or block?

Or is it much much more complicated than that?

It's no more complicated than on any engine--here's the procedure from the '03 shop manual...

These guys have pretty much covered it. Are you looking at cams for your ride OP? If so which ones?

Nothing crazy even if you are degreeing the cams like in the MHS article. The only real difference between setting the timing on these motors vs the average pushrod engine is that you have to do everything twice on these.

I like the Comp EX Stage 2's, add on some LT's and O/R X pipe and I already have flowmasters. And a retune of course...The icing on the cake will be the MAch 1 hood scoop/cold air setup.Given the massive amoutns of room in front of the engine..a cam swap seems fairly straiht forward, probably would be even easier with the intake off due to the wires and crap being out of the way?

You don't have to remove the intake at all to do the cams. May i suggest doing a little more research on cams, because those Comp cams you're talking about are probably not your best choice.

Lunati has a small selection of VooDoo cams that dont look bad.

What do you suggest?

That depends on what plans you have for the car. I would start by calling Modular Head Shop. They make cams for all applications.

Default late but may help others

Had same problem on my 4.6 3valve. Holds idle but sounds horrible, started 2 months bfour hand where it would have acceleration lag issues. One morning on the way to work car tooka dump on my day and became undrivable. Took it to FORD they said i need a new engine and @ $8700 because of idle problem and a ticking from under drivers side valve cover. Took it upon myself to find root cause... did a few simple test for pressures, voltages, fluid levels and everything came back perfect i was stumped till i said ok whats under the valve cover. Poped it off to find the return spring on drives side cam phaser has lost tention broke and caused timing on bank 2 to skip 2 teeth. Cam phasers can b found for around 200$ if one goes do your self a favor replace both! an i will be looking into lockouts for these especially since fords aware of the cam phaser problem and had recalls for the f150s but not our mustangs so all in all $200per phaser and $1300 for labor and retiming engine not bad ford you can go suck your $8700
