Looks like my last resort worked out! Managed to score one from another junkyard in town. Got the whole filler neck all the way up to the gas cap and the surrounding plastic, lol. All for $30!

cliffy, there's a small amount of surface rust on it, just one little area and it's not very deep at all. Any rust protection stuff I could buy? Also probably not a good idea to put the plastic cover back on it, right? Should I leave the filler neck uncovered or cover it up with something else?

Thanks.

I think the cover causes the problem. My son just got a 99, I went to cut his cover off and saw his had rubber fuel line sleeve instead of the corrugated grit / moisture trap I had. Don't know if that was a fix or factory.

I just replaced that grommet on my 01. It was $20 at the ford dealership. took me an hour & it was a pain but my tank was 3/4 full. I also replaced the filler neck on a friends 2000. It rusted out! the black wire loom stuff Ford put around it collects water & dirt & eats it up. It was about 3-4 yrs ago & cost $160 from Ford. It wouldn't suprise me at all if it was 244 now. Thanks Ford, you did it again

Well I spent a good 3-4 hours on it today fixing it with my dad. Had no problems taking it out really. Did have to drop the fuel tank completely since loosening the straps on it didn't help really. I held the tank in place while my dad connected the filler neck into it. It was heavy as hell with a quarter tank of gas left in it.

Here's the "new" part from a 2000 New Edge I found in a junkyard in town. Got it for $30 with the grommet for the tank! It has small spots of rust on it but shouldn't be a problem for a long time I hope.

Here's the old filler neck with my half-assed temporary fix that actually didn't do too bad.

This is the other end that snapped off when we pulled it out of the tank finally. Completely rusted through and we had no idea how it stayed together all this time.

The old grommet that came out of the fuel tank. A bit ripped up.

The biggest pain was getting the new grommet into the fuel tank because of the exhaust tip hanging there in the way so I had to loosen that up and move it around a little bit. It was still a tight fit with the new one but motor oil did help. The other trouble was lowering the fuel tank completely but otherwise not too hard. Hope I don't have to replace this part again, but at least now I know what to do just in case.

I suggest all you guys that haven't done this to go check yours out to see what it looks like.

Had the same problem (thanks flamingo for posting my link).

I believe they need to recall that part. If you had the problem, please do yourself, and all mustang owners a favor and fill out the following complaint:
