Default How To Drive Mustang in Snow

Hey all</P>

I just got my Mustang on Thursday. It isa 1998 black GT with an auto tranny. I was driving it over the weekend to get a feel for it and it snowed where I lived so I also got a chance to see how it drove in the snow. It was not too bad, just had to drive slow and easy and I got stuck a couple of times. At one instance when I got stuck a guy in another Mustang pulled up and told me to put in the low (1) gear and ease out. I tried that and it worked but why is the RPM's so high?? I was driving up a hill (small hill) slowly in the (1) gear but the RPM's was like at 2,000. I was scared to damage something so I opted for putting it back in drive and using a shovel when I got stuck. </P>

Could someone give me some pointers on how to drive it in the snow and whats the limit in revs on that low gear. All in all it seems to handle itselffairly well but I did feel it slide ever so often.</P>

Thanks</P>

Turn the track control OFF when you get stuck and rockit back and forth, going quicly from d to r, "rock it and gun it" as we say here in Buffalo.</P>

Don't follow too close to others, when you go into a sping try to drive out of it going in the opposite direction. With a little practice you'll be passing all the soccer moms in their suv and mini vans in no time. RWD is far superior to FWD in the snow, no matter what the manufactur's tell ya, just take a littel practice.</P>

Don't rock back and forth from drive to reverse, that is KILLER on a transmission.

I got it ... NO rocking. Whats an Army LPC?!? I never heard that one before. So now when would I use those low gears. I have a number 2 and a 1. Under what conditions? And how can I make sure that I am not overworking the engine when driving in the lower gears. I am going to tire rack now to look for some tires. </P>

Thanks</P>

Well hope o got a lot if freinds to push you out, or your going to be good freinds with teh tow truckdriver.</P>

Ocaasional rocking isn't going to hurts anyting, been doing it for 20 plus years and never hurt a tranny.</P>

Don't use low gears, you actually wanttherevs low as possible so your not in your powerband, manuals have a big advantage in the snow cus you can start in 2nd or 3rd, auto's your kinda stuck with what they give ya.</P><edited><editID>DW-03GT</editID><editDate>37963.6242476852</editDate></edited>

You can rock if you're stuck just watch your temps! You canheat the trans and motor real fast!</P>

Always leave yourself an out.(room between you and other motorists) should an incident arrise. If it looks like you're going to get stuck you probably will unless you avoid the area or commit &amp; give'r'</P>

Is traction control in all Mustangs from 96 on?</P>

Also, I would think a little extra weight in the trunk couldn't hurt for snow driving.</P>

In my 2002 GT, 5 speed, I put 210 lbs. of sand in the trunk, located as far forward (over the axle). Ever since I did it, I've never had a problem. BTW, I echo the "turn off the Traction Control". You are much better off controlling things yourself. Also agree with starting in 2nd gear. Be veeerrrry easy on the throttle. Big power, wide tires, and light weight tend to be your enemies in the snow.

BTW, we got about 20" (snow, that is) over this past weekend. No problems driving home on Friday (3-4 inches on the ground). Left it in the garage Saturday & Sunday. No real problems today, although they did a crappy job of plowing around here.
