Default What is this piece hanging?!

Ok so the other day I was driving and I kept hearing a clanking sound when I would go over a little bump. So I stopped n looked in the back and there is this big black bar hanging.. Looks like it was screwed on but it is seperated from the part that screws in so if its a part I really need I will have to replace it or get it welded. Or maybe I can just unscrew the other side n take it off? Pics below.. Thanks ppl.

It looks like your rear sway bar.

Ya looks like the sway bar. Yeah you can take it off but your car will handle like crap.

Mine broke a few months ago. I pulled it off and haven't replaced it yet. car handles just fine without it. I wouldn't go racing or anything though.

That is the stabilizer (anti-roll) bar. Get one from a junk yard shouldn't be more than $50, RnR is 30 minutes tops.

You can remove it, and as it is now broken on one end it's not doing anything anyway...

This may be a good chance to get one from a junkyard that is larger in diameter. I'd have to look up the diameters for each of the Mustangs to know which are larger.
Edit: a mid- '90s Cobra rear bar would be 27mm vs your stock 24mm bar. THAT is what I would look for to replace your broken one with.

A larger bar would help to correct the natural understeer which the factory designs into cars. This is NOT designed in for performance. It is designed in to make the vehicle easier for non-driving fools to handle without crashing. I hate the factory nuts on clips that are used to mount the bar. I'd get new nylon locking nuts and washers with slightly longer bolts.

Umm not really, in 98 most of the cars didn't even come with one.
