Question about smoking
OK, I'm a Mustang newbie. I've watched them fondly for years and finally got around to buying one myself. I picked up a 2001 GT automatic (got sick of driving a stick, no booing please) in true blue metallic.

At any rate, I've noticed that the car tends to smoke quite a bit from the exhaust. I got my first oil change 3500 miles after I bought it, and the oil was pretty dirty. I'd suspect it was burning oil, but I don't know when the oil was last changed before I bought it. The exhaust smoke doesn't smell like burning oil, and it's not blue, so I'm not sure if that's it.

It usually smokes right after it's started and will smoke a bit until the car warms up. I assumed that this is normal. But on colder days (around 20 degrees) it is still smoking even after a 30 minute drive to work. This strikes me as odd, but since I've never had a Mustang before, I don't know what to expect.

The car does have a K&N filter on it and an aftermarket exhaust system. The final stage of the exhausxt pipes are appreciably larger than stock, but I haven't had it up to see what is installed underneath. Could it be just excessive moisture/condensation built up in the larger exhaust pipes? What are your guys' experiences with this?

It's called being cold outside.

Exhaust is hot....meets the cold air and wolla! Smoke!

NO, seriously, if your car was just bought and the oil was that dirty at a 3500 mile oil change, you might want to have a mechanic check it. Didn't you check the oil before you bought it??????????

Question about smoking
Does it use any oil? valve seals are a common problem on the 4.6's but usually when they get around 100,000 miles and a few more years on them tho.If an engine is buring oil, it would not affect teh color of it, When a car burns oil either oil gets into the combustion byu either getting past the rings or seeping past the valve seals. Change your oil more often if you like it, Under no circamstances don't excced 3 months on an oil change, don't worry about miles if you do a lot of short distance driving ie. driving less than 20 miles every time you start the car. When you start the car water condenses in the engine adding water to your oil, it takes 50 miles of driving to vaporize this water on each startup. Also stay away from Pennzoil, it is the only oil that seems to ruin valve seals. thats just my 2 cents.

3 month..why is that?...I hate to say it but I agree with n02.....if the oil was dirty when you bought it why wasn't it changed them...find yourself a redline,k/n or amsoil filter to help clean up the engine...how many miles on the car?
