Default Disappointed with new headers!!!

Wow, what a let-down. Last week I had some new JBA shorty headers installed because they're the only CARB legal headers out there and I live in the Socialist Republik of Kalifornia. My previous set were Bassanis with a catted X pipe and they made the most awesome sound and power. The JBAs with the stock H pipe reinstalled are really a disappointment. The sound is just a bit meaner than stock, the power is lacking and the throttle response sucks. Those Bassanis were the s**t and one of the reasons that people always asked about my exhaust sound (through a Borla catback). Now that I have to get "legal" (because my car is now 6 years old) I imagine I'll have to drop down in class at the drag races. No more 8.9's, boo hoo!!!

Yeah, well obviously having the stock h is a big part of your problem. Changing that alone would make a big difference. Can you not have a high flow catted pipe in CA?

The stock h-pipe is the obvious problem, not the shorty headers (which aren't that much of an upgrade over stock anyway). Get a shorty w/high-flow cats and that should open it up quite a bit.

Well, LT's aren't legal in Cal. and NO aftermarket catted X pipe is legal either. My smog guy "overlooked" my Bassani headers, but the Bassani "Catted" X pipe wouldn't pass the sniff test. Therefore, JBA headers and stock X pipe.

once you pass the sniffer test, swap back to your other pipes...

Thats what you get for living in CA and not being able to get longtubes.

Find youself a tuner and have him write you a smog tune. As long as you can pass a visual inspection your tune can be modified to pass basically anything unless you have no cats at all. It's 50/50 chance whether or not the smog guy is going to recognize an aftermarket midpipe. They are usually just looking to see if there are Cats on it when they look under. Most of them don't know off the top of their head that our cars come with 4 instead of the normal 2 or what the stock pipes look like. And while off road pipes will give you back more power than a catted x, dropping 2 cats is better than having all 4 stock ones.
