You only need the complete kit if in/out play is very noticable. It should be pretty tight when you try to push it in/pull it out.
If the play is all side/side then the basic kit is what you need. The only thing that causes side/side play is the bearings being too worn/too big inner diameter compared to shaft diameter, or the outside of the bearings being too small for the center cartridge, this happens when the shaft kind of welds itself to one of the bearings. If it happens it will almost always be exhaust side, due to running it extremely hard, then shutting off shortly after without allowing the engine to idle a bit to cool the turbo down.
It's even more so important on turbo cars that you let the turbo & engine get up to operating temp before running it hard & likewise letting it cool down after running it hard before shutting off. That's the main reason you see cracked exhaust housings & coking.
I usually recommend letting the car idle for at least 10 seconds after startup before driving & wait till operating temp, or near it before getting on it hard.
