Default strut nut help

so i'm in the middle of replacing my front struts on my 92 2.3l. i think the ones on there were stock and the lower mounting bolts were a beast to break loose. i have the struts out of the car and i can't break lose the nuts on the top of the struts that hold all the mounting hardware on. i tried holding a flat head screwdriver in the slot that's on the top of the shaft and turning the nut, but it broke the tip of the screwdriver. when the struts were in the car and it tried to remove the nut, the shaft just spun and spun and spun.

anyone got any tips?

i didn't need a spring compressor. there are no springs on the struts.

i had to take the struts to a shop and have them hit them with am impact hammer for awhile to bust them loose. the vise grip/screwdriver and wrench wouldn't bust them loose.
