Default Car overheating, help please .

We just got my daughter an 89 LX convertible. We drove it to do a foster dog transport about 20 miles interstate. We got caught in about 20 minutes stop and go traffic on the interstate and 30 minutes of stop and go on the highway getting to our destination. The temperature was fine for the ride. I made 2 stops, one to get gas and the other to get a phone charger and started up just fine, temperature just fine. Made it t our destination and parked to wait on the arrival of the dog and immediately saw smoke and temp was maxed out. There was what looked to be a lot of coolant on the ground but must not have been as much as it looked like because the radiator was full and overflow was full and looked fresh and green. All the hoses and water pump are new.

Husband came about 45 minutes later and we traded cars and he drove it home with the heat maxed and top down. Made it home just fine after 30 minutes of interstate driving with no overheating.

A mechanic friend of ours seems to think it may just be the radiator cap so we will change that and he is coming over this weekend to change out the thermostat, since that has not been recently changed out. Any other idea what this could be based on my information above?

Is the fan working and kicking on when the temp starts to climb.

I wasn't able to check. shut car off when I saw smoke. it didn't overheat in stop and go traffic which is when I would have expected it to. Husband brought It in for inspection today and gauge stayed cold.
