Default RE: How many DIY head porters out here?

Those pictures are not finished product, that's as far as I went at the time on the old factory heads.
The heads on my engine, I disassembled when new and ground the thermactor bumps off, gasket matched the intake & exhaust ports, just a slight clean up in the bowls for fear of screwing up the new 3 angle valve job.
I really need to remove those heads and do some more productive grinding, similar to what I did on the old heads, but more carefully.

Then maybe a higher lift, slightly more duration cam. Right now I'm at 218 @ 0.50 w/ .488 lift, 110 LSA Lunati flat tappet hydraulic cam, I was thinking on one of the new Lunati Voodoo cams, dual pattern duration at a 108 LSA, in the .530 lift range with, and shaving the heads a bit for more compression(or a thinner head gasket).

Sounds like a fun spring project, then I might even paint the car this summer too.
Any suggestions?[sm=signs003.gif][sm=thanx.gif]

Pics of the engine are at the top of this page. A couple pics are in the photo gallery of the car. It looks like a beater, but it's good enough to paint now. The interior is semi-ratty with only some different seats.
I ran out of money for this thing long ago, but it's still a good driver.

I might put some color on it for sure this summer, I have a way with this elcheapo thing, but I stalled a while back. Gotta get movin' again. lol

most people seem to having more $$$ than brains..as you know those old iron piece can be made to run quite well... the main thing in the ford head is to unshroud the valve for better flow also paying great attention to reshaping the cambers and undercutting under the seat....bying one thing, anyone upgrading stock heads is to buy a good set of cutback valves as there are worth up 15% as well as a 5 angle valve job.....alot of people just go in and hog the hell out of them and wonder why they run worse..the key is to shaped and make it flow smoothly..polishing is over rated mostly on the intake side the air and fuel need time to mix but poishing the exhaust side has good benifits also using expoxy on the intake carb opening floor help this

Exactly. The key is not to hog out the ports, but just to create more area in the bowls under the valves, and smoothly contour the transition into the ports. Hogging out the ports will kill low speed air velocity, but will breathe better on the top end for racing.
Contouring the short side radius is another area that will help flow and velocity, but I screwed up on those old heads and went too far on an intake floor and found water...
But practicing on old heads will give you an idea of just how far you can go before trashing a set of good heads.

It's all in the technique, smooth those babies like you're giving a hot chick a massage, don't dig right in for the main course and blow your load.

If y'all notice in those pics, I started to unshroud the valves by opening the chamber some around the valves, but too much of that will kill my compression. The heads will have to be milled after valve unshrouding.

I have a better idea of how to do this after years of reading porting articles in magazine and forums, I just need to pull my heads again.

Almost ready to fire it yp just making shure everything was tight I like working on my car its more fun then paying someone to do it and you learn somthing, porting the heads was easy just take your time, what i did was lay my gasket on the head put a few bolts in it so it dose not move much and then traced the gasket to the head and took my dremal tool and cut it out.

What kind of heads are those? Are they factory castings or aftermarket? Did you just gasket match the ports? Or did you get into the bowls and everything?
Believe it or not, I did all that bowl work with a 3/8 electric drill, it took forever. But this time, I'll use either my air grinder or an electric grinder.
I did that stuff back before I ever had a garage to work in, and no decent tools...next time should be fun.
