glowing headers after cam install.
im with 69mach, it sounds lean or it is sucking air somewhere making your fuel mixture lean, also on the timing gear (ON THE CRANK) did you make shure the little 0's were lined up with the cam gear????? if not i would say you have the cam timing off, their is a few different slots in the gear. How do you know the motor is on tdc? what did you do to get it their? sry thats kinda a dumb question, cose it shouldent fire if it is way out.
i didn't see anywhere in your post where you said you checked the timing with a timing light...you can't just go by 'it points this way'. get out a timing light and see exactly where your timing is. it should be advanced 10* for factory specs. if that's right, then it's in your cam timing. to get you started...the rotor in the distributor should point to the number one spark plug wire on the cap (while the engine is on tdc). that should get it started and allow it to warm up to operating temp. then get out the timing light and fine tune the timing.

no its unburnt fuel burning up in the headers... either ign timing retarted or cam timing off

the first time I started it after the cam install I did time it with a timing light, and put it to the factory spec 10 degrees advanced. my problem is I forgot to mark where the distributor was before I took it apart. So I think I have it in the wrong direction.
could someone put their motor to TDC and let me know where your rotor points relative to the intake.
thanks, I will check for vaacum leaks. I heard I can use propane, is this safe, or can I just use some brake/carb cleaner?

to find TDC I just took out the #1 spark plug and put my finger over it while rotating the crank clockwise to feel when it is in compression stroke, and then go till the timing mark lined up with the 0 on my balancer.
