Default newbie wants to upgrade

Hi guys, I'm a n00b so don't flame me too bad. I just got my grandpa's mustang and am looking to add some peformance to it. Looking for any suggestions to putting some more power or cosmetics to this mustang:

1990 White Ford Mustang LX Convertible 5.0L

Automatic, Power Steering, Power Brakes, Newer tires, Brand new flowmaster muffler and tailpipes b/c the car failed my states emissions regulations.

Has a Pioneer CD player as well

The car has some minor cosmetic problems, driver side bottom panel (under the door) has a 1-inch diameter rust hole. My dad says I can fix it with some bondo but doesn't know where to get some touch up paint for it. Any suggestions? (White Car)

I'd like to add some more power to it as well as maybe some new rims and tires. Not sure on the cost of all this but I'd like to keep it under $1000 in total upgrades. It's an automatic so I know I won't get the true potential out of it, but I'd like make it faster than what it is now. If you made it this far, thanks for listening to another n00b plea his case. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Flamers, do your thing.

Thanks guys.

oh yea....I'd like to install these on my own too, my dad has worked on a couple of cars so I think as long as we're not replacing the engine, that would be great. Also if you need pictures/part #'s to give me a better suggestion, I could probably arrange that in no time.

well it really matters what your going for with your car. if you want looks only then you can get some nice 17 or 18 inch cobra rims for about 800 (polished, chrome would be about 1000). But if you want some performance, then get maybe an, x-pipe, headers, intake, pulleys, port job??? or you could just save up a little to about 1500 and get yourself some nice heads which would really allow for your car to perform.

Start with a cold air intake and 4:10 gears. Then put a bottle on it.

would this be optimal for starting out? or is it too cheap or have a bad reputation? They look easy enough to install.
