Automatic to Manual Conversion

Automatic to Manual Conversion
My automatic tranny has decided to go bye bye. I have access to everything needed to convert to a manual. Has any one done this? How difficult is it. I am fairly mechanically inclined but looking for advice on if I should convert or just rebuild the auto. Thanks.

This is just my opinion, I've nver converted from auto to manual, but I love driving a manual. If it were me and I had the time and money I would put a six speed in there.

Hey Baken,
I've done the conversion on my car. I'm not a proffesional mechanic or anything, and it only took me maybe 8 or 9 hours to complete. If you've ever dropped a tranny out of a stang...its fairly simple. One huge plus for the swap is that all the hole for the clutch cable is already in the fire wall, though if I remember correctly the speedo cable was run through it for some reason, so I had to pull the gauges, disconnect it, and put it through the right hole, which was covered by a little rubber gromet. The pedal assambly was a huge pain in the ***, i think that took up like 4 hours alone. It was a while ago, but I am pretty sure I had to drop the steering column. I don't think I took the dash out, but it was a complicated puzzle trying trying to get that stupid thing out, and new one in. If i ever do it again, i'd probably pull the dash. THe wiring is a piece of cake, but you gotta oull up the carpet. If i haven't scared you away, email me with any questions and I'll try and help ya.

-P.S....Oh yeah...IT was DEFFENITLY worth it!!!!

RE: Automatic to Manual Conversion
keep the auto, get a first class rebuild with a shift kit and a 2,500 rpm stall converter and you'll be time and money ahead in the long run. remember, it really hard to miss a shift with an automatic!
