check engine light still comes on how to get codes?

I have the chilton book.... i heard that you have to put somethin in the ignition to get the codes? can't find anything about that in the book.. please help.

the EEC hook-up is under the hood on the driver side right near the firewall

it even says it right on it.. you CAN'T miss it

This is the diagram of my test connector. I don't know if it is the same as your car. Maybe someone can verify. I just use a jumper wire in slot 2 and into the gray connector. Turn key on. And read the check engine light. First three flashes are the start point.

By the way if anyone knows what is causing a 311 & 314 please give me some info. (KOER)
