yea that is correct... i think he said 5th and rev. are hard to engauge not that they don't go in... and the fact that the tranny works fine once it's moving shows that it's not a syncro problem...
personaly i would start by adjusting the clutch, and if that doesn't fix it then replace the pilot bearing... those are realy the only two things that can cause this problem

RE: tranny problem
yea the pilot bearing is able to be done by the "backyard" mechanic there are a few tricks of the trade to make it possable... the easiest and cleanest way is a slide hammer... if you don't have onve pm me and i'll explain a few other ways to do it...
and lou that totaly depends on the customer and what they want, the price i listed above is for a traditional rebuild which consists of bearings, seals, and the syncros, if there is anything else that had alot of wear on it i ALWAYS contact the owner and let them know about it and if they want it fixed while its apart i'm more than happy to do it, and since a traditional rebuild means every part is removed the labor charge doesn't sky rocket but does go up just a little (depending on what extra parts are needed)
i do the same thing a reputable shop does, purchase a rebuild kit and replace those parts and if anything else is needed let the customer know and go from there, currently i have no extra parts but usualy i have some laying around and if i have the part needed i will let the customer know that i have a used part or i can order a new one, usualy i charger half price for my used parts ( i don't use anything that i wouldn't use in my own tranny)

RE: tranny problem
i wont be suprised at all if it is your clutch not disengaguing fully like 94gtcoupe said. but i have a few questions, they mighta been adressed already, but im in class so i just skimmed over the thread.
does it do it in a select few gears? or every single one?
when your moving, and shifting hard, a. is it possible? and b. do you get any grind at all? if so, all or which gears?
how long ago was the clutch replaced? if you know.
i ask all this because, my old tranny was fubar and it did that and WAS my syncros, however i will be suprised if that is your problem, if it were you would have noticed problems for a while before this, such as grinding when you throw it in gear hard, etc. pilot bearing isnt too bad a job, but if you do it, go ahead and throw i clutch in it too... already that far, might as well spend a lil more, and eliminate one more thing...

RE: tranny problem
+1 on the clutch. If it was only 1 gear that was giving you fits maybe it would be something else, but since it is most gears it has to be a something that deals with all gears. If it was just 1st none others it would probly be 1st syncro. Your clutch is not releasing the trans all the way. Buy an adjustable quadrant, them stock plastic ones only last so long.
