C&L MAF w/pipe induces check engine light
I just had a C&L 76mm MAF w/pipe and conical K&N filter installed on an otherwise stock 1990 5.0 foxbody. Of course, the check engine light came on as I was driving away from the shop. It seems to run fine, however. Some quick internet research seems to indicate this should not have been an entirely unexpected phenomenon and it is probably now running lean. Do I need to have this checked out asap? Is there any potential for serious damage?

Then, you need to verify that the C&L meter is correct for your application...
Are you using the stock computer?
Are you using the stock 19lb injectors?
Are you using the stock MAS (MAF sensor) on the C&L? What is the sensor part number?
It may be that you just need to 'clock' the C&L MAF, but all of the above needs to be checked and verified first.
