Default Identifying transmissions

Alright....I have an 85 GT vert but It was originally a LX someone converted it to 5.0. Its an automatic transmission and it slips badly going from 2nd to 3rd. I am wondering how could I tell what transmission it is? I don't know what year of mustang the 5.0 is out of. I'm assuming it could be C4 or AOD but would it be on the transmission somewhere? What transmission would be best for performance? I know a manual would be better but it'd cost too much to swap it. Thanks...If it helps any its a carbed 5.0. It seems to be weak on power but Im assuming the transmission is really bad so its robbing power.

Its probably an AOD, if it came out of another fox, its an AOD and thats what is the cheapest/easiest auto trans for a fox. You could just get that one rebuilt, shift kit, and a converter and youd be fine. Im not sure how to check, so I may be wrong, but thats your best bet.

If its a 3 speed its a C4. Its a 4 speed (overdrive) its an AOD.
Those were the only 2 autos offered in fox bodies.
