Default Timing

Well I found my spout connector, found the timing marks, but there is no pointer as far as where the line should be. Is it suppose to be conncted to the timing chain cover, and is that what I need in order to have a pointer. I have to do my timing by ear right now, I do have a time light but it is useless pretty much.

Default RE: Timing

if there wasn't 12" of fresh snow on my car, i'd go out and verify, but i believe the timing pointer is bolted to the block. i could be wrong here.
