AOD Rebuild
Has anyone on here attempted to rebuild there AOD? Mine needs rebuilt and I was going to take it somewhere to have it done, but if its not that bad of a task, i'll do it myself. I have a lot of mechanical capability, I'm GM certified and work at a Chevrolet dealership in my area. I'm a cheapskate, and I dont trust other people with my parts. I always wonder if there giving it 110% or just half assing it. Just wondering if anyone has attempted this, and if they have any input on whether I could do it myself or if I should just take it somewhere else.

RE: AOD Rebuild
yes aod's can be rebuilt to hold quite a bit of hp. i woulnd not suggest doing it yourself unless you know what ur doing, thats a very easy to screw up if ya have no tranny experience, leave it to the tranny guys to do what they do best!

RE: AOD Rebuild
Unfortunately there is no 'cheap' way to fix the AOD.
Mine finally blew up (literally, the drum shaft snapped) after 286k miles. And yes it was the original tranny. But I do not have power adders on the engine. The OEM replacement cost me about $700, and has heavy duty plates.
But again, expect to dish out at least $700 bucks for a good tranny, and then more if you want to make sure it will hold together with power adders.

RE: AOD Rebuild
art car non lockup converter (4500rpm stall)
hardened one piece input shaft with c6 splins
alto red clutches with kolene steels
mechanical diode
A++ OD servo
2" OD band
full manual valve body with trans brake
added 3 cluches to the direct clutch set and added 1 clutch to the intermediate clutch set
basically the same setup as the lentech 700hp tranny but i have a better valve body which i was told will allow the tranny to hold 750hp because the full manual valve body keeps the tranny oil at such a high pressure the clutchs dont slip

RE: AOD Rebuild
how bad is a manual vb on the street, i have condeplated the idea of one. if i was gonna get one i might as well get a trans brake but i dont want one due to the fact my tranny would be toast faster.

RE: AOD Rebuild
Coincidence. I just purchased a 3DVD set from a guy called "Badshoe productions", for rebuilding the AOD. He comes highly recomended from the guy's on the "Ford Transmission Forum". It's 4 hours long, but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. In the introduction, he says you should have tranny experience, but also says if you pay attention to detail, the average shade tree mechanic can perform this task. It also requires a couple of special tools which he points out on the video. There is a short video I found on Youtube regarding his DVD, and adjusting the TV cable.I also attached a link to his website.
