Default 5.0 Spark Plugs

I recently Installed Spark Plugs on my 5.0 - And the guy at the Advanced Auto Parts said "Gap them to 54" ?
Well i did, The outcome is the idle feels worst lol. And then someone told me to gap them in between 42 - 46 ?
What is the proper gap for this car!!!

And Can i salvage the current Spark Plugs , If not i will rebuy i went with Motor Craft the first time should i do it again!
