Default bumping timing

Insert Quote[/align]Okay so yes I have tried search but I would like to present my case here.

Working on a 1994 GT with full exhaust and a K*N drop in w/o silencer. I just got home with it, I drove it from my brother -inlaw's house to here ran it as empty as I could, filled it with BP Amoco Ultimate 93 octane and a bottle of STP octane boost and drove around for about a half hour to circulate it all through the system. Noticed no difference (not that I would) but it SEEMED like the exhaust had a slightly different smell to it, but it may be in my head.

My neighbor is a major hot rodder and I'm gonna see if he can lend me a timing light and maybe some of his time and see if he can help me bump it on here.

Now... IS advancing the timing really worth it? I was told stock base timing is about 10 degrees, and it's common to advance it to 14 degrees. Does 4 degrees base timing really help overall? Assuming I get it to advance right and drive fine will I feel the improvement? I have never really heard spark knock or ping before, so does anyone have a video of it or a sound clip or can describe it well, so that on my test drive, I know what to listen for exactly?

Thanks in advance!

I dont have a sound clip or video, but you will notice the difference in sound of the engine when you go to far. I have mine set between 12 and 14, couldnt tell for sure. And yes, you will feel the difference. Dont get the big idea of going to far, you will pre-detonate. Meaning the plug will fire when the piston on its way to the top of the cylinder. Unless you have ready access to high octane fuel, I would not recommend pushing the timing to the maximum. Some engines will vary from car to car on the most you can advance the timing. Start at 12 and work your way up until you have no pinging. Test drive it, and back it back down if you have to. And dont forget to remove the spout connector before you advance it.

yes it does add some hp

and pinging sounds like some nasty chattering commin from ur engine ull kno it for sure.. if you hear it BACK OFF THE THROTTLE mine is set at 12* and i can still run 87 octane 14* you might have to run 89 or 93

yes it does help and you will feel it, if you advance too far you will noticethe chattering when you accelerate.

Sweet guys thanks. I can't wait to try it. I have some 3.73s and am waiting for a few more parts and will be putting them in.

I have a feeling the exhaust, and timing advance are gonna shine with the gears.

weee

the 3.73's will really help. my car felt like it went on the slim fast diet when i installed them.
i would not go any further than 14 degrees on the timing unless u have done some major work to the engine, which will require a higher octane fuel.u can also get wise and rund 2 gallons or so of 110 to a full tank of 93.jus dont get to ball z and add to much,2 gallons will not hurt anything.
