Default clutch trouble I think?

I gust bought an 88 gt 5.0 and am having trouble. When I put in to 1st gear and try to go I rev it up to about 1,500 to 2,000 rpms and let out on the clutch slowly and it acts like it is going to die.but when I rev it up to about 3,000 to 3,500 rpms and let out slowley it clears up. the previous owner said it is because of the racing cluch but I dont know can anyone help me.

Put some good fluid in the tranny, or put it in 1st gear before you put it into reverse, or holding the clutch in longer before you shift into reverse all will help. If it was your clutch it would most likely grind in every gear. Reverse is a problem for most all M/T, especially as they age.
