Default oil separator needed?

I keep having this problem of oil getting sucked into the intake through the hose that connects to the intake and goes to the passenger side valve cover. The engine runs fine but I lose at least a quart every two weeks through the intake. My iac and throttle body are just covered with it. The oil is not black but golden brown. I have been searching and reading about oil separators but can't determine if I need one or not.

I discovered this steel wool canister below the pcv valve and was wondering if that could cause this problem since it is all gunked up.

If this has nothing to do with it, should I just put an oil separator on it and be done with it ???

And do you just throw away the oil in the separator or dump it back into the engine oil?

Sorry about all the questions but this is really annoying and expensive!!

Default RE: oil separator needed?

Not to address the real problem of WHY liquidoil is leaving your valve cover, but here's what I can tell you about catching oil. Turbo guys run what they call a "catch can". You can google "catch can" and find all kinda of different models. These are just oil separators that catch oil from the valve cover when the turbo cars go into boost and see some positive pressures in their valve covers (pretty much what you're seeing, but you're not boosted, so I don't know why you're doing it). Anyways, search for a commercial "catch can" if you want. Or, the cheap way out is to go to your local hardware store and look in the air compressor accessory area. They have small filter separators that will cost you around $10. You can remove the filter from this and you have a cheap separator. Just put this in-line between your PCV valve and your intake and it will catch all the liquid oil carry-over.

Here's an example how-to of the cheap-o catch can modification on an SRT-4: http://www.srtforums.com/forums/f75/...install-97923/
