86 5.0 Stock, oil q's
Hey guys,
I have some questions about oil for my stock 86. First off heres the story. The guy who we bought it from hasn't changed the oil in 2 years. Granted he hardly drove the car due to medical issues, other projects, etc, but it obviously needs to be changed. So i've talked to many people who say I should run a cheap, simple oil through it for a few hundred miles, then once the cheap oil had cleared out all the old gunk and stuff, put some nice, good oil. This sounds logical and i've had many people tell me this. My question is, what type of oil do i need(ie 10w-30) and how many qt's do I need? I'm keepin the motor stock. Also for when I do the better oil, whats a good, reputable brand? My friend said I should throw some royal purple in there, but is it that good?
Also, how are the K&N filters for these cars? I heard some guy sayin something about not enough back pressure from them and getting an oil leak. He sounded like he wasn't too sharp in that subject. lol
Lmk
Thanks,
Tony

what ive done in the past and this works extremely well, is put a quart of tranny oil inwith the motor oil, tranny oil is a high detergent oil which means its very good at keeping things clean. i let the motor reach operating temp then let it run about a half hour longer to let the tranny oil do its thing. then drain it out and make sure you get rid of the filter, then install your new oil and filter. if your car takes 5 quarts then put in 4 quarts of cheap oil and 1 quart of trans oil. im tellin you it works. but i dont recommend driving with it in as all of the trash thats flushed out will eventually and potentially clog the filter. hence starving the motor of oil.

adder get's a little frustrated at time's with some of the questions people post and i understand why sometime's. Just use whatever oil you desire, 10/40 will be fine. 5 quarts. It's just an oil change, nothing to stress over.

10w-40, any brand is good, I use the walmart stuff since its mobil 1 oil minus the detergents and additives, I recommend sticking with the regular dino oil, depending on mileage, wear & tear, some seals might not seal like new, regular oil helps seal them, synthetic opens them up
now for the K&N, remove the air silencer and sticking in a K&N rectangle filter in the stock airbox

Some of the newer oils have reduced phosphorus levels which can create lubrication problems. Run a good oil with a higher Zinc/Phosphorus level(ZDDP, ZDP, Zinc Phosphate etc). Some of the Mobil 1's are good, Valvoline VR1/Racing, Redline and others. Just avoid any oil that has "GF-4" or "Energy saving" etc in the rating circle, high levels of zinc and phosphorus don't create problems for engines, but lower levels can. The EPA has mandated lower Zn/P levels to protect catalytic converters(even though there's no proof that high Zn/P oils damage them), and more and more lubrication related failures seem to be popping up.

For the K&N oil filter, it is a decent filter but not worth the price. One of the best filters out there is the MotorCraft FL1A, it has some of the best filtering capabilities, it's one of the cheapest, and Walmart stocks it.
