you need a timing light, the best $35 you could ever spend!
without it you are pissing in the wind

you have to remove the spout before setting base timing but you need a timing light = no other way and you may have to use a wire brush to clean off balancer so marks are visible

I used water and a shop towel, rubbing pretty hard, to clean off the balancer. Then used a Sharpie to mark 10, 15, and 20 degrees. It sure makes it alot easier to see when using the timing light.

if you know you are on the right tooth, for a street tune - if you have a vacumn gage -
remove the spout and advance or retard the distributor till you get the highest vacumn. highten down and try it out.

i tried working on my timing today, however when i remove the spout connector, the car wont even start up. any ideas?
i followed those instructions on how to restab a distributor, and now its running better than it was before but still not perfect. and the distributor is really turned closewise alot, and timing looks advanced alot. can i be a tooth off or something. maybe i didnt start exaclty at TDC?

i figured checking the timing with the spout connector, increases it 15-20degrees. (i read somewhere im pretty sure) so its probably really at 0 degrees then. im thinking i need to advance it some more. however the distributor wont turn anymore bc the spout connector will be facing the front of the car.

djsprinklesnjo, When you say you unplugged the spout connector, did you actually unplug the ignition control module? (grey rectangle thing on the distributor). Sorry if i misunderstood you, something seems off.

Also, is kgriffithanddjsprinklesnjothe same person?
