Default Backfire problems

I have a stock 90 mustang gt besides cold air and msd cap. When the car is cold it backfires like crazy when i step on it, but after it gets warm its fine. Sounds like a timing problem to me, but if it was it would run ****ty all the time right? Any help is appreciated.

run a koeo/koer test and check for any codes relating to the thermactor air system.....my antibackfire gulp valve went bad on the tube that connects to the rear of the heads and blue flames would shoot out the pipes on harddecel at night[:@].....replaced and was fine
