Default Rear end noisy, clunk

Ok, I am still working all of the bugs our of my recent purchase. When hitting the gas and letting off in any gear, more noticable when in a lower gear, I am getting a clunk out of the rear end. I lifted the car up and it feels like there may be too much clearance in the rear end gears. When turning the pinion and holding the tires I can feel the clunk that I am hearing. Maybe to much backlash in the rearend. If the pinion depth is correct is it as simple as moving shims around. Is it possible to take one small one out of one side and move it to the other an measure for the proper clearence???? I am not sure who set up my rear end or if it was done right.
thanks
mat

no !! if it still retains factory spacers they are non adjustable when changing backlash..like you want to do..you'd have to change shim set up on both sides to where it is adjustable..but first you need a dial indicator to check backlash...008-.012 max is spec....you may also have wear on the clutch pack and thrust washers worn on the spyder gears = smaller gears..also axle splines may have wear too..all needs to be carefully inspected

Are you talking about when the tires go from foward to backward you can hear/feel a clunk before it catches like it is loose??

Im trouble shooting this same dam problem as we speak, mine looks like there is too much play with the spider gears inside the carrier, along time ago i ran it with low fluid for a period if time before i new it was low,and probably destroyed my diff.Im also replacing new control arms/bushings.
But indicate your backlash to spec if its off and buy a shim kit (cheap)And like mjr said, check your clutch packs and there is a spec for that too
Good luck

I had a similar noise, my pinion nut was not tight enough. I fixed it and problem solved
