Storing a camshaft

Storing a camshaft
I just bought a camshaft and found out that I will not be able to install it right now. So now it will be about 5 or 6 months before I can install it. Can someone tell me the best way to store the camshaft? Should it be vertially or horozionally. Is there a type of oil I should lub it up with? I heard WD-40 will turn it brown after a while. What do you guys think?

I clean them up, spray them down with pam cooking spray and wrap them in glad wrap, put the in a box with the type of cam, make of cam and cam spec's marked on the box then wrap the box in plastic wrap. If you decide to use the cam 10 years down the road you know exactly what you have and when you take it out of the box it looks the same as the day you put it in the box. On Flat tappet cams I use an old lifter box to keep the lifters for that cam in order like they came out and cling wrap it to the cam. I store them flat on the shelf. Unlike crank shafts the cam will sit flat on the bearing in a cardboard box. I do store my cranks standing up although I have never see the evidence that a crank laying on it's side had any negitive effects on them. Just habit from old mechanic tales

Yes you have to clean it up really well and oil it back up with motor oil going back in. I find all kinds of things to use Pam cooking spray for. I use it as a rust preventer on cast Iron heads, blocks and even spray it on the rear quarter panels of my cars at the dragstrip to keep the rubber off. wipes right off.
