CNC ported heads-347
#11
Spending 300 for caps and 500 for machine work to put the caps on, on a 50 dollar block is a joke, as for cnc heads the TEA TFS stuff is top of the line as far as affordability goes. Look at a TEA cnc head then an AFR cnc head.

caps? what kind of caps? caps hold the crank on right?...500 for machine work to put caps in? arent there beefier caps that arent 4 bolts?

Putmain studs in it and leave it alone, noone makes 2 bolt main caps for a 302 block, maybe the chinese do but you can have that junk. Yes caps arent just bought then put on, gotta align bore the mains, the align hone the mains, then need studs, then need to buy the caps. Its a waste, been there done that in the 90's

I know you cant just put them on. I know you have to align them. so just stud them and they will be fine?

Regarding the cap and stud girdle issue: yeah, just put in APR main studs, use the stock caps, then find a good crank cap girdle. It goes on after the caps and helps to stabalize the lower end. You may need to use a deep sump pan tho. I don't mean to sound mean, but, if you don't know what a main girdle is you may want to pick up a few books and read up on the whole engine building thing. You don't need to worry about the bottom end till you cross the 450-500 HP mark, and by then you've picked up a lot of engine building tips. Or, you just learn the way all the old-timers have, build it, it breaks, build it again, only better. Fortunately, 5.0's are pretty cheap and are not irreplaceable.

Speak for yourself or some old timers. I've been building engines over 40 years and the only thing we were limited to was the quality of parts available and not a throw together deal. We couldn't pick up a lap top and point and click into the 10's. We worked for it. The parts see see on the market now are the result of years of R&D done by "Old Times" pushing the limits. I was getting 10 second time slip before most people here were born. I was doing it with modified OEM production Heads, blocks, cranks and rods. The limits were within the parts not the "old timer". There are "hacks" in every generation. All of us "Old timers" don't fit that profile.

Ha! I bought my AFR 185s 3 years ago for just over 1200! I guess they inflated some...
They are awesome heads. Very great quality. I just wished they would've came with beefier valve springs from the get-go...but no big deal.
I'm not sure on the wait these days from them but it took me amonth to get mine! I'm sure with the economy the way it is, they may be stocked up!
