Default Transmission Help...please!

I don't know much about transmissions, but I can tell you what's going on. I am having difficulty putting the car into first, third and fifth...all upper gears. I have to shove it in and hold it, otherwise it pops out. Second and Fourth go in fine and stay put. There's plenty of grab on the clutch...only 5000 miles plus or minus. Does this need adjusting or is it time for a new one?
Thanks for the help.

if it is popping out most likely the synchros are shot..or somehow the sfift forks are bent and not getting a full engagement..letting it pop out

Maybe, maybe not. If the synchros were shot it would clash going into gear most likely. Popping out is a result of bent forks/rails preventing the synchro from allowing the dog teeth and slider to fully engage, or worn/chipped dog teeth/slider that is causing it to slide off under a load.

If it won't go into gear without force and has to be held in gear I'm betting on bent forks/rails.

Also, don't drive it like that. If you have to hold in in gear you're keeping constant force on the fork pads, which will get them hot and burn crap up.

Do you have an aftermarket shifter with adjustable stops? If so the one on the front of the shifter may be out of adjustment.

Thanks guys. I may just try and find a used tranny for now. I just want to R/R and don't have time to try and fix it. Thanks for the advise. I was about to drive it today, but decided not to. Guess it has to sit...man and I just got it smogged after sitting for 15 months.
