Default Reverse is gone?

I have a LX convertible 5.0 with an AOD.

I was going to back my car into a spot and the car wouldn't go in reverse. It was like it was slipping really bad. It would try to move and just sat there. It ran forward fine and was backing up just fine before. I just got it recently and no issues. The fluid is red and dosen't smell burnt.

I am not sure when the filter was changed last and wonder if that could be the problem. It has been awhile since I have worked on one of these and never owned and automatic. Please, can somebody point me in the right direction?

Are there any vaccum line that connect to the tranny? I noticed a couple that were broken off. I am hoping that it may be a low fluid issue. Would that cause reverse to go while the others work? Just trying to look at everything before I drop the cash for tranny parts.

low fluid will affect engagement in all gears not just reverse and no there are no vaccum lines on an AOD

I guess I only have one more question. What are the chances that a valve in the valve body may be stuck? Somebody was telling me about that. Like I said, I have never worked on an auto tranny, so maybe I am grasping at staws.

could have crap in the valve body, if you wish, you'd have to take it apart/down and clean it out.

Ya, tomorrow when I get home from work, I'm gonna drain and replace the filter and start there. I guess I can reuse new parts if I have to end up pulling it. Besides, the rear main needs replaced any way so if I end up pulling it, I can take care of that too.

OK, so I go out this morning to drive to work and it backs up??!! When I get to work it, doesn't want to again. So, what ever it is. it is temp related or affected. I added some tranny fluid this evening and still no joy.

If it were the reverse band, would it do this? Or does it sound more like a valve body? Still gonna do the filter and fluid change tomorrow to see what happens. Any other ideas?

filter & fluid might make it worse.

aod trans dont last very long in our cars at all. and changing the fluid thats helping hold everything together will only make it worse. ..My AOD went in my 87. It started out as the same reverse symptoms then started acting funny in forward gears as well. Time for a T5 swap.
