13 degrees timing enough?

13 degrees timing enough?
had a buddy advance my timing to 13degrees at a local shop. i didnt ask why but id thought the min. was 14 d. the motor is pushing 140k but runs great and has a few bolt ons with an aod. how come it didnt ping with 87 in the tank? im running 93 to be safe. seems it wants more timing right ?

the best performance gains will be seen by advancing as far as you can, without pinging. it'll be a trial and error thing until you've got it perfect.
if you do this with 93 in the tank, you cannot go less than that unless you drop the timing down with it.
if you think maybe down the road you might run into a few days a month where you have to scrounge for gas money and just stick some 87 in, leave it where it is now.

This is correct. For example your timing at 15* then back to 13* with no hp loss.
I backed my race cars' timing down a few degree at the track one day to try and make it run a little cooler on a hot day and it made no less power which means the timing advanced that far did nothing for it.
Also the it is a play with it type thing. I drive with a 1/2 inch wrech and move it around til it has the most power.

exactly, specially if you eat up the advancement with higher octane
higher octane REDUCES the combustability of the gas.... thats why it keeps it from detonating.... and robs power
you want to be as lean as you SAFELY can be... under the existing weather conditions with the lowest octane possible
i spray on 89 and run 12* as long as its not over 85* or the humidity is crazy
no spray i run 14* and 87

oops DP
anyways... yeah "power tuning" is the best
do it at the track though... bump timing in 2* increments.... start at about 10* and work up... when the MPH slows down... go back to where it was highest
you'll slow down b4 you hear it ping
