Turn the key and nothing happe
I own a 84 mustang converted into a 5.0 liter. Here is the problem, when i first bought it, it had a bad ignition switch. I would turn the key and nothing would happen what so ever, i replaced it and i thought everything was fine. The same thing has now happened again, so i took the steering column off and played with a few wires and eventually the accessories came on and i could start the car, once i shut it off all this happened again and now i cant get anything, no radio, no blower nothing. The switch is fine so its not that, but i wondered if anybody has had a problem like this or has any advice on how to go about fixing it? Please help i have just done a whole lot of motor work and dying to be able to start my car with a key. Sorry about the long post.
Thanks in advance

I have that same problem with my 85. That whole switch assembly wears out over time. What I did was take off the plastic covers from the steering column to get to the switch. You should see the connector a little bit below and in front of the key cylinder. It's held in place by these small metal "hooks" which look like mini letter "j's." Try pushing the connector into the steering column while starting. It should start right up. In lieu of replacing the steering column and wiring harness, I took a 3/8" socket extension (about 10 inch) and hammered the "hooks" LIGHTLY to hold the connector in place. This will work for a while until the connector works it's way loose. My last version is I took a tarp bungee and wrapped it around the connector and column after hammering the hooks again. Hopefully it will last.
Hope this helps!

Not the switch itself, but the connector with the wires. It will be on the right side (if you are looking at the wheel) of the steering column. The connector is white on my 85. The "j's" are small pieces of metal that hold the connector in place. Kinda crappy design, but they are old cars.
