Which transmission?
Hello all,
I am building a V8 conversion MGA. The motor will be a streetable 347. I can get my hands on a 1989 LX 5.0 T5 transmission. If rebuilt, will that transmission be able to handle the added torque of a built 347, or do I need to upgrade to the T500/T600 series?
Thank you in advance for any and all information! :-)

The T-5 will survive if you don't plan on driving it hard. If you plan on racing or things of that nature you should either up grade to the 500/600 or contact Astro Performance. They make bullit proof internals for the T-5.

t5 is hardly bullet proof no matter what internals you have, it just prolongs the inevitable. t5 by design is weak. so be kind to your wallet if you are racing this vehicle and put in a TKO500-600, this is where you want to be if you are racing and insisting on being manual.

I'm always the first one here to condemn the T5 for it's weakass internals but the lightweight of the MG will take alot of stress from it.
Horsepower is a poor way to rate a transmission. My Cummins Ram probably has less horsepower than a stock fox but I garantee it would shred a T5.
Launch and shifting style are another easily overlooked factor.
