Post 1989 5.0 Emissions Help

I have a 1989 Saleen that I'm cleaning up. The motor is on a stand and I'm going to remove all the smog pump garbage as this will be my auto-x car. Forgive me for not knowing the name of this part but there is a tube that connects to the back side of each head and travels to the pass. side of the motor with a check valve. What does that do? I removed it and the tubes were plugged with black crap anyway. I have looked into the holes and it doesn't appear that they are open anyway (blind hole). There does look like there is some sort of a thread insert in the hole. I tried matching a bolt to it but a 3/8" -24 thread (I believe) would thread in but was extremely wobbly on the pass. side and on the driver side the bolt slid over the threads that were there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is you coolant crossover tube. Pretty sure you need that. I am not sure though. As I am running all my smog equipment.

This pipe connects to the air pump so I don't believe it to be a coolant crossover.

That is the air injection tube for the SMOG system.
The black crap is carbon build up.

You can either use this to plug the hole
http://www.store.partsdinosaur.com/product1521.html

Or

5/8-11 x 1" bolts with 2 added washers.

2 washers because the holes are slightly deeper than 3/4" before you hit the inside of part of the casting... the washer helps space them out slightly.

you don't need it if you are getting rid of all the smog crap.

Tube is gone. Thanks for all the tech tips. I'm sure I'll have more later. I'm dropping the motor back in Sunday.
