Default ticking sound

ok as we all know im no tech. so ive got this pinging sound coming from under the car. it is not rythmatic. it is speratic. lol im not a spelling bee champ either lol. i took off the cover for fly wheel and it is not loose. my buddys dad said he thought it was a push rod, rocker or valve. could that be the problem? i thought if it was one of those wouldnt it have a rythym to it?

Do this, go to your local parts store and buy some "Octane booster." You pour that into your gas tank and run it through a little. If the pinging stops, that means you're getting detonation. Either start using premium fuel, or retard the timing by a few degrees.

pinging is detnotation

a lifter is tick
valve is a tap
rocker is also a tick

ping sounds like a rattle can when you shake it up

if you got this reduce timing or use 93 octane

Have you checked to make sure your spark plugs are tight? My engine was ticking and that was the problem.

Regarding what 90GT said, I have known wires to break down and spark off every once in a while. Not rythmic but sporadic. You can wait until dark and look under the hood in a dark area and look for a spark. If you have a spray bottle and can mist around the wires, that will typically really light up a weak wire.
