Default NewBe with 87 questions

Hello everyone I am buying an 87 GT tomorrow and was wondering what are the common problems with these cars? I have never owned a Mustang before so I know nothing about them. I am a good mechanic but I have always been into Jeeps. I am paying 2 grand for it, it has:
-4 inch cowl hood
-smoked clear head light 6 pcs set
-off road h pipe with mac cat back (sounds good)
-bbk 2 inch lowering springs
-adjustable struts front and rear
-rear disc brakes
-ford motorsport posi trac
-ford motorsport 373 gears
-aod trans with b&m street strip kit
The speedo doesn't work, and I have no idea how many miles are on it. Carfax last reported it to have 48K miles and the speedo reads that, but it could very well be 148...

Haha I am actually reading this thread now. I didn't see it last night when I was browsing. I guess I can consider myself lucky having a good interior and working ashtry cover..
Any thoughts on the odometer situation?

Is the AOD trans an alright trans with a stock motor for a daily driver or should I still expect issues with it?

Sounds to me like for that kind of money you are getting a good deal on it.
AODs are AODs, some seem to live and some don't.........

Aods can last a long time if you take care of them, just all depends. The speedometer is a simple system, what you can do to start out is pull the cable off the trans and then use a drill to spin it and see if the gauge reads. If it does, you either aren't getting it seated at the trans or a speed gear issue which is very uncommon. If it doesn't you have a broken cable, not connecting right at the cluster or the gauge itself is bad. If it comes to that you can take off the cluster and use a small screwdriver to spin and see if it reads, if so it gets a little obvious from there

Thanks guys.. The speedo on these fox bodies are exactly the same as a Jeep, so no problems there I guess. I already found a write-up on how to remove the dash.

There is no removing the dash when replacing the speedo cable or cluster.

The AOD sucks. Horribly geared and weak as hell along with being heavy too. A t5 is 75 lbs, 3.35 1st V the aod 2.40.

Just there you need 4.10's to equal 1st gear launch of a t5 with 2.73 gears.

Do the swap when it breaks or get a lentech

Same equipped car will run a full second faster with a t5

I'm not worried about speed at this point I am more concerned with reliability. This will be my daily driver until tax return time. I didn't mean remove the entire dash I meant I found the write-up on removing the cluster sorry. It looks like parts for this car are really cheap too. Found a speedo on ebay for $15!
