5.0L (1979-1995) Mustang Technical discussions on 5.0 Liter Mustangs within. This does not include the 5.0 from the 2011 Mustang GT. That information is in the 2005-1011 section.

Welp, back to the drawing board.

The transmission seems to be fine. Though the bellhousing and the starter both cracked. Seems the u-joint seized. The little needle bearing jammed their way into the yoke and well, boom.

Exactly the hell I said. The transmission seems to be ok save the bellhousing and starter and u-joints and the one cat it blew a hole through.

That's a picture of the rear of the tranny with the exhaust still up. I've gotten the exhaust off and am about to weld in a new cat already. Also got new u-joints and yolk. I'll take pictures of the bellhousing when I get it off. The starter has already gone and gotten warrantied at my local O'Reilly.

Also, it seems the rear output shaft spins easily by hand. Is it supposed to be like this?

If its in gear it shouldn't spin by hand at all(unless you're the hulk). If it's in neutral, it should spin, but with some resistance behind it. Like trying to spin a rear tire that you're adjusting the e-brake on and it just went a smidge too tight.

As a side note, when u-joints fail, they fail by themselves. Your catastrophic failure here... I'm not sure what caused it, but I'm willing to bet you need a tranny.

I'm hoping you're wrong but you're most likely right. It does have some resistance to it and seems to shift fine but I shall see.
