I think the previous owner has given you some mixed info. 87 was the first year of EFI on the Mustang 5.0's.

Correction there 01MGGT...1986 was the first year for EFI but with speed density.

an 87 efi wouldnt even work in a 97 unless it was a carb convert. The computer wiring and harness are all set up for the newer 4.6L and i highly doubt they took the time to change out the entire harness. it would make more sence to go to a carb setup .

As far as the trans goes i would think a good mate to that moter would be somthing from a 94/95 . Im not to familiar with the 96/98 mustangs so im not sure the trans would even bolt up to a 5.0 they may have used something else, youll have to get under there and get some numbers off it to see what it is.
I had a 95 v6 converted to a v8 using a 68 carbed 302 and the stock trans bolted right up to it. As for the stall convertor I think youll need to remove the trans to see whats in it.

actually , you're both wrong, 84-85 had an efi option, whose technical name was Cfi = central fuel injection the efi/cfi was on auto equipped 5.0's

either way efi or cfi wouldnt be compatable with a 97s computer or harness. it would have to be a carbed setup. Unless they swapped out the computer, harness , and alot of other things. The only thing that makes sense to me would be to do a carb convert.
Now if it was a 94/95 then it would make sence to keep the efi I have a 94 with an 89 block using all the upper intake and fuel injection from the 94.

Seems like some of you don't know that you can put any engine in any car/truck. I think it might be wise for some people to do their research before they open their mouths, it would save sooo much time and argument.

MJR46- Good job on knowing your stangs. I am by all means NOT a stang guy, but that is something I did know.

lol I never said you cant put a efi 5.0 in a 97 I just said you cant use the 97 harness or computer it would have to be changed to an earlier harness for a 5.0 and not a 4.6liter
