Question Power Steering delete

hey guys..

my power steering doesnt work.. could be bc of numerous reasons.. but i plan on getting a manual rack in the near future anyways.. so my question is.. if i take out the power steering pump, and all the lines and ****, but leave the rack.. what would happen?

i mean there is NO fluid in the pump as it sits now anyways..

thoughts?

and when replacing the rack, do i HAVE to get a manual rack? or could i just put another power steering rack in with out the lines and pump?.. reason im replacing the rack, is it is lose as all hell, and needs tie rods, ends, etc..

thanks for any info

You need a manual rack if you want it to last past 500 miles. Running a power rack without fluid will quickly destroy it.

i would say don't go with a manual rack for the simple reason that it will be hard to turn at low speeds and suck when it comes to parallel parking. If it were me, i would just fix what needs to be fixed on the current rack.

I would get a manual rack if that's what you want... I drove an S10 with manual steering for about 50,000 miles... It's not that big of a deal.

That said, I like power.

I pulled the pump and lines and left the rack in an rx7 and daily drive it for close to 30,000 miles no problem before the motor gave up on me. That being said that's a lighter car so...

well i mean.. based on how the **** works.. what would really cause it blow to all hell?.. i mean essentially, wouldn't it just not have the power behind? is it bc of the fluid no being there?

I think it's more of an "I've heard of" thing not really something that they have actually experienced. Everyone told me my rack would be shot in a month. Still fine 2 years later.

contrary to other posts, a manual rack will have a different ratio and is your best option as it won't be as tough to turn as a power rack that has had the assist removed/pump
