My New 1990 Mustang GT, Lots of questions
I just picked up a 1990 Mustang GT.

Bored 30 over to 306
Full FM Hpipe exhaust
Cold Air intake
3.73 Gears
My goal: 330RWHP
So I'm looking for a definitive answer regarding the capabilities of budget builds. I would be happy with around 330 rwhp. I see a lot of arguments in forums regarding getting that on the cheap.I found a couple local craigslist ads for GT40 heads, intake, typhoon intake and various other lower end parts for dirt cheap. I could realistically get the h/c/i combo for around $900-$1000 going this route.
Is it or is it not possible getting 330rwhp out of GT40 heads, Typhoon intake/70mm throttle body and maybe something like an xe268h cam?
I don't think my cold air intake and h-pipe exhaust really make a difference in the matter but I'm brand new to cars and I'm learning.

1st let me say that is a beautiful fox , great find.
More realistically with gt40 heads/intake, your looking at about 260 rwhp. I have heard some guys swear they saw 280rwhp after gt 40 swap , but dyno numbers are not very consistent.
As far as the typhoon , I assume you mean the K&N series cold air intake?
Or are you referring to the professional products typhoon upper/lower intake?
If you want to get up in the 300-350 rwhp range your gonna need to step up to some AFR or trick flow heads . A Track heat intake or trickflow intake in place of the GT40 intake.
Now considering that gt40 stuff can be had out of a junk yard relatively cheap , generally you can pick up the intake upper/lower for about 75 bucks and the heads are around 100 bucks. Not including any work that needs done to them , such as valve stem seals, springs , and such.
If your budget is 900-1000 bucks, don't expect to hit that golden 330 hp number.
Save up a bit more and you can get an AFR top end kit for about 2500 that would put you right about where you want to be.

You cant do 330rwhp with just 5.0 liters and singe valve heads.
A HCI with traction solved will make you very happy, and more than enough for the streets.
Our cars don't weight anything compared to these newer cars, so we don't need 330rwhp to make the numbers we like.
Ive seen great numbers with a 306 with these heads.

What an awesome car! I had an 88 fox that I miss everyday! I agree with dawson. I was running a DSS 306 motor in mine with trick flow components, and I have nothing but good things to say about. I would recommend saving up a little longer and going with a superior product. I think you will be happier in the long run.. From the looks of it you seem like you might want to keep it for a while. Good luck on your quest for 330! Let me know if you need anything for your new ride! I always give my fellow forum members great deals!

Thanks vivid. So if I spend a little more, will the parts I put on my current motor, fit on a larger one if I decide to upgrade in the future? Also, since the motor is bored to a 306, do I have do bore the heads machined?
I'm obviously new to cars. Trying to do as much research as possible.

No problem! That would all depend on what parts your buying, and what motor you might go to. Obviously, if you drop a big block into it, there isn't many parts that will interchange. But if you stick with a small block ford, there could be parts that you might be able to keep. Without knowing exactly what you plan on doing, its hard to tell you exactly what will work, but you're more than welcome to ask me for advise along the way.
